Grażyna Bacewicz’s Akropolis is a cantata for mixed (SATB) chorus and orchestra composed in 1964 to mark the 600th anniversary of the Jagiellonian University. Setting a text by Stanisław Wyspiański, it was premiered on 10 May 1964 in Kraków by the Cracow Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir under Andrzej Markowsk.
Bacewicz’s orchestration balances rich choral sonorities with transparent instrumental textures, often juxtaposing homophonic vocal passages against coloristic wind and harp interludes.
The musical language combines modal harmonic inflections with mid-20th-century modernist clarity. Choruses alternate between chant-like declamation and more expansive, arching lines, while orchestral episodes provide both ritualistic solemnity and moments of luminous choral resonance. The result is a concise yet evocative work that merges national literary heritage with Bacewicz’s mature compositional voice.
