Ernest Bloch’s Concerto Grosso No. 2 (B.84), composed in 1952 and published by G. Schirmer in 1953, is scored for a concertino string quartet (two violins, viola, cello) against a five-part string ripieno (string orchestra).

The work is in four movements — I. Maestoso – Allegro – Maestoso (G minor); II. Andante (G minor); III. Allegro (E minor); IV. Tranquillo – Animato (B minor → B major)

Stylistically it returns more directly to the Baroque concerto-grosso model than Bloch’s earlier Grosso, emphasising the antiphonal and soloistic interplay between quartet and ensemble while retaining Bloch’s mid-20th-century harmonic language. The work’s first widely cited public performance was given on 11 April 1953 by the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Sir Malcolm Sargent.
