Manuel de Falla’s Spanish Dance No. 1 (Danza Española No. 1) from the opera La vida breve was arranged for full orchestra by Stéphane Chapelier in 1928. In Chapelier’s orchestration the dance functions as a single compact movement—commonly programmed on its own—and a typical performance of this standalone Danza Española No. 1 lasts about four minutes. The music preserves Falla’s modal melodies and syncopated, dance-driven momentum; performances require tight rhythmic precision and a light, percussive touch so the guitar-like figurations and Iberian accents remain audible within the orchestral texture.
