Score Type

Manuel de Falla’s Suite No. 1, Scenes and Dances from El sombrero de tres picos, is an orchestral extraction of the principal dances from Part I of the 1919 ballet.

Musically the suite condenses the ballet’s Andalusian character—fandango, seguidilla and jota-like gestures—into sharply defined dance-tableaux that alternate lyrical episodes with rhythmic fireworks. Because the two sung cante jondo numbers are omitted, Suite No. 1 functions as a self-contained orchestral showcase of Falla’s idiomatic use of Spanish modal inflection, dance rhythms and economical orchestral color.

The Suite has 5 Movements:
1. Introduction
2. La tarde
3. Danza de la Molinera (Fandango)
4. El Corregidor
5. Las uvas
