Manuel de Falla’s Suite No. 2, Three Dances from El sombrero de tres picos, is an orchestral extraction of the principal dances from Part II of the 1919 ballet.
he suite is scored for a medium-to-large orchestra with an emphasis on percussion (castanets, tambourine, xylophone, tam-tam), harp, piano/celesta and coloristic winds, which Falla uses to project Iberian rhythms and folkloric modal melodies; textures alternate between rustic, dance-driven energy and terse, lyrical interludes. The Miller’s Dance (farruca) is notably darker and more percussive than the neighbourly seguidillas, while the final jota brings the suite to a raucous, celebratory close.
The Suite No.2 has three movements: I. Danza de los vecinos (The Neighbours’ Dance — seguidillas), II. Danza del molinero (The Miller’s Dance — farruca), and III. Danza final (Final Dance — jota).
