Richard Strauss’s Sonatina No. 1 in F major “From an Invalid’s Workshop”, TrV 288 (Op. 135), was composed in 1943 as one of two wind-ensemble works from his late period.
Stylistically, the work combines Straussian late-Romantic warmth with neoclassical formal clarity. The opening movement introduces its principal motive with poised horn calls and lyrical woodwind lines; the central Romance and Minuet juxtapose graceful, song-like melodies with dance rhythms; and the finale drives to a sprightly conclusion through brisk counterpoint and spirited ensemble interplay. Precise articulation, balanced voicing, and unified phrasing are essential to highlight both the idiomatic wind writing and the work’s singularly intimate character.
