Leroy Anderson's Pirate Dance is drawn from the ballet sequence (the Huckleberry Island Ballet) of his 1958 Broadway musical Goldilocks, and was published in a concert version for orchestra in the early 1960s. In about three minutes, it delivers the buccaneering swagger and brilliant orchestral colour typical of Anderson's best miniatures. The scoring is for full orchestra with percussion, with optional saxophones and an optional mixed chorus, so it adapts easily to the forces available. A bright, crowd-pleasing showpiece, it makes a lively addition to any pops or light-classics programme.
