Atterberg’s Horn Concerto in A minor, Op. 28, was composed in 1926 for the virtuoso Axel Malm and premiered in 1927 by the Stockholm Philharmonic under Adolf Wiklund with Malm as soloist. The concerto unfolds in three movements—Allegro pathetico, Adagio, and Allegro molto—and lasts approximately 22 minutes.
Stylistically, the concerto blends Late-Romantic lyricism with touches of Nordic mysticism and even light jazz inflections. The first movement follows a loose sonata-rondo pattern, showcasing characteristic horn signals; the Adagio presents a three-part song form with long, singing melodies; and the finale is a spirited dance-like rondo. Throughout, the solo part demands secure high-register playing, agile articulation, and expressive phrasing within a clear, classically balanced structure.
