Arnold Bax’s In Memoriam (1916), GP 190, is a single-movement elegiac chamber work for cor anglais, harp, violin I, violin II, viola, and cello. It is unrelated to Bax’s orchestral In Memoriam for orchestra, and the “(1916)” in the title is part of the work’s name rather than a statement of its composition date.
Composed in 1917, it was first known as Irish Elegy before the later published title In Memoriam (1916) was adopted. In character, it is a concentrated, lamenting work rather than a large-scale orchestral essay, and it belongs to the group of Bax’s Irish-inflected pieces from this period.
