Irving G. Fine’s Diversions for orchestra (1959–60) is an orchestration of four short piano pieces that Fine scored for full orchestra (with optional saxophones). The set comprises Little Toccata, Flamingo Polka, Koko’s Lullaby, and The Red Queen’s Gavotte; the material ranges in origin from incidental Alice in Wonderland music of 1942 to a Little Toccata written in 1958, and the orchestral Diversions are dedicated to his three daughters, Claudia, Emily, and Joanna.
The orchestral version was premiered by Harry Ellis Dickson with the Boston Pops at Symphony Hall on November 5, 1960, presented as part of a children’s program. The pieces are typically described as compact, witty, and amiable—light in character but carefully crafted—and have since appeared on modern recordings and program notes that emphasize their blend of neoclassical clarity and affectionate humor.
