Frank Martin’s Concerto for seven wind instruments, timpani, percussion and string orchestra, IFM 6, was composed in 1949 at the request of the Bernische Musikgesellschaft.
The work is cast in three movements — Allegro, Adagietto, and Allegro vivace — and Martin said that his aim was to show the qualities and virtuosity of the wind soloists, with the timpanist also given a notable role. The first movement is especially concertante in character, with the solo instruments introducing and exchanging thematic material, while the slow movement and finale provide contrast through a more reflective middle span and a livelier concluding movement.
