Alan Rawsthorne’s Symphony No. 3 was composed in 1964 on commission from the Cheltenham Festival Committee and premiered that year by the BBC Northern Orchestra under George Hurst in Cheltenham.
Lasting approximately 31 minutes, the work is cast in four movements played without pause:
-
Allegro
-
Alla sarabanda: Andantino
-
Scherzo: Allegro molto
-
Finale: Allegro risoluto
The symphony balances Rawsthorne’s characteristic rhythmic drive with moments of lyricism. The opening Allegro introduces the principal motifs with assertive brass and energetic strings; the Alla sarabanda offers a poised, dance-like contrast; the Scherzo bristles with rhythmic vitality; and the finale synthesizes earlier material into a decisive, resolute conclusion.
Throughout, Rawsthorne’s mature orchestral voice is evident in his precise motivic development and clear structural design. The symphony’s contrasting movements demand both orchestral unity in fast‐moving passages and refined balance in more reflective sections, making it a compelling statement of mid-20th-century British symphonic writing.
