Dmitri Shostakovich composed his Symphony No. 6 in B minor, Op. 54, in 1939, completing it that September and premiering it in Leningrad that November under Yevgeny Mravinsky and the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra. It followed the triumphant Fifth Symphony by two years, and Shostakovich had initially spoken of writing a large-scale symphony honoring Lenin. That plan was set aside, and the Sixth emerged instead as a purely instrumental work in a fresher, more personal vein. The composer himself described its mood as contemplative and lyrical, evoking spring and youth, offering a striking change of tone after the drama of its predecessor.

Its structure is bold and original: rather than following a conventional four-movement plan, the work opens with an expansive, deeply expressive Largo, then unfolds into two shorter, exuberant movements, a graceful, waltz-tinged Allegro and a dazzling, witty Presto in sonata-rondo form full of energy and popular flavor. The result is a symphony of striking contrasts, moving from profound lyricism to sparkling humor within a single arc.

Though it stands between two of Shostakovich's most celebrated symphonies, the Sixth has earned particular admiration for its inventiveness and its wide emotional range, and audiences at its premiere responded so enthusiastically that the finale was reportedly encored. Its blend of a searching, songful opening movement with two brilliant, high-spirited finales gives performers a chance to show remarkable range, making it a vivid and rewarding addition to the twentieth-century symphonic repertoire, and a genuinely engaging discovery for any orchestra.
