Die Liebe der Danae, Op. 83, is an opera in three acts by Richard Strauss to a German libretto by Joseph Gregor (after sketches by Hugo von Hofmannsthal). Strauss worked on the score in the late 1930s and completed it on 28 June 1940; he described it as a "cheerful mythology."

Although a full public staging had to wait until after the war, a private dress rehearsal took place in Salzburg on 14 August 1944 attended by the then eighty-year-old composer; the first public performance was given at the Salzburg Festival on 14 August 1952 under Clemens Krauss. Wartime restrictions and the general disruption of cultural life caused the long delay between completion and public premiere.

The drama mixes Greek myth (Danaë and Jupiter) with the Midas legend and a comic-serious treatment of wealth, love and renunciation: Danae, daughter of the impoverished King Pollux, is courted under disguises and tests of value, and ultimately chooses mortal love over gilded temptation. Strauss frames this material across three acts that alternate lyrical ensembles, solo episodes and choral set pieces.

Musically the work belongs to Strauss’s late style, notable for a bright, transparent orchestral texture, frequent self-references and a mixture of pastiche and original lyricism. Typical performance length is substantial (circa 180 minutes), and the scoring calls for a large orchestra with chorus and an extensive cast of soloists.
