Richard Strauss’s Enoch Arden, Op. 38, is a melodrama based on Alfred Tennyson’s poem, using Adolf Strodtmann’s German translation. In Strauss’s original form, it is written for narrator and piano and was composed in 1897; it is a concentrated recitation work in which the spoken text remains central and the music underlines the poem’s changing moods and dramatic turns.
The version by Adalbert Baranski is a later orchestration of Strauss’s original melodrama, credited as “after the melodrama; arrangement and instrumentation” by Baranski. This should not be confused with Strauss’s own original piano version: Baranski’s version keeps the same work and narrative, but replaces the piano accompaniment with orchestral writing for narrator and orchestra.
