 Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Folk Songs of the Four Seasons, IRV 153, is a cantata for women’s voices and orchestra composed in 1949. It was commissioned by the National Federation of Women’s Institutes for its first Singing Festival and was first performed at the Royal Albert Hall on 15 June 1950 by a choir of around 3,000 women with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir Adrian Boult. The work brings together two central aspects of Vaughan Williams’s musical life: his lifelong advocacy of amateur choral singing and his deep engagement with English folk song.

The cantata consists of a Prologue followed by four seasonal sections—Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter—setting a sequence of traditional English folk songs, many of which Vaughan Williams had collected himself earlier in the century, while others came from collectors such as Cecil Sharp, George Butterworth, and Lucy Broadwood. Although the songs remain distinct, they are carefully arranged to form a continuous musical progression through the changing seasons, alternating accompanied and unaccompanied choral movements.

Rather than simply harmonizing traditional melodies, Vaughan Williams shapes the material into a unified cantata of considerable variety and expressive range. The score combines lively dance songs, pastoral lyricism, narrative ballads, and Christmas carols, using the seasons as a framework for exploring the rhythms of rural life and the English folk tradition. Although less frequently performed than many of his other choral works, Folk Songs of the Four Seasons remains one of Vaughan Williams’s finest large-scale arrangements of traditional song.
