The Eclogue is the central movement of an uncompleted piano concerto, and its title was applied posthumously. Finzi revised it twice during his lifetime, and the surviving movement stands on its own as a complete concert piece rather than as a fragment. In character, Eclogue is restrained and lyrical, with a clear melodic line and a texture that is compact but expressive. It's as simple in outward means yet rich in effect, and its lasting appeal comes from the way it combines calm pastoral atmosphere with a concentrated emotional core.
