Fartein Valen’s Pastorale, Op. 11, was written between November 1929 and July 1930 and first performed by the Oslo Philharmonic in the spring of 1931. It was published in Oslo in 1933. A short orchestral piece of about five minutes, it is scored for a chamber-sized orchestra of woodwinds, one horn, timpani, and strings. It comes from the early 1930s, when Valen, a pioneer of modernism in Norwegian music, was developing his own personal, contrapuntal voice. Concise and finely scaled, this score and set of parts offers orchestras of modest size a rare and worthwhile Norwegian miniature, well suited to programming alongside larger works.
