Ralph Vaughan Williams composed Nothing is Here for Tears in January 1936, in response to the death of King George V, setting words adapted from John Milton's Samson Agonistes for chorus with orchestra, and it was first performed just six days after the king's death, on 26 January 1936, in a BBC broadcast concert conducted by Walford Davies. Solemn and dignified in character, the piece can be sung in unison or full SATB setting, and this brief, deeply moving choral work offers an ideal and readily accessible addition to memorial services, commemorative concerts, or any programme calling for a work of quiet nobility.
