Heitor Villa-Lobos’s Suite for Piano and Orchestra, Op. 30 (1913), is an early orchestral showpiece that transforms a set of piano character pieces into a three-movement suite for piano solo with orchestral accompaniment. The three movements are titled: 1. Allegro non troppo (A Portugal e Espanha), 2. Assai andante (Ao Brasil), and 3. Movimento de tarantella (A Itália). The work is varied in mood, moving from Iberian gestures to Brazilian lyricism and finishing with an Italianate tarantella. The piano retains a prominent, almost concertante role throughout while the orchestra supplies coloristic and rhythmic support rather than Romantic-scale development.
