Leroy Anderson wrote Clarinet Candy in 1962 as a showpiece for the clarinets, and this version is for wind band. It is a brisk, good-humoured novelty of under three minutes, built on rapid, fluent passagework that puts the whole clarinet section in the spotlight, much in the playful spirit of Anderson’s other instrumental features. The writing is demanding but rewarding, so it suits bands with a strong, confident clarinet section. It is ideal as a lively concert feature that sends the audience away smiling.
