Jaromír Weinberger’s Concerto for the Timpani dates from 1939, shortly after the Czech composer settled in New York, and is scored for solo timpani with four trumpets and four trombones (a tuba can replace the fourth trombone). This unusual combination gives the work a bold, ceremonial brilliance, with the soloist set against a compact, powerful brass choir. It is an uncommon opportunity for a timpanist to appear as a true concerto soloist, and its modest forces make it practical to programme for brass sections, festivals, and conservatory ensembles alike. A short, distinctive showpiece, it offers a rare and rewarding addition to the timpani and brass repertoire.
